If you’re using a mouse and keyboard on your PC, there are chances that you’ve considered what kind of benefits the more expensive equipment has over the cheaper stuff. If you use a relatively high-end gaming mouse and keyboard, you might also notice that they have particular features that cheaper mice and keyboards do not offer. One such feature of these high-end mice is changing the polling rate of your mouse. It is the time rate of a mouse to communicate its current position to the computer.
Which Frequency Is Best For Mouse?
A 500Hz polling frequency equals 4ms per reporting second, meaning the position of your mouse is updated upon each click or movement within that period. The difference between 500Hz and 1000Hz is minimal if you have a high-end gaming mouse, but it’s pretty apparent when using an average or entry-level device. The best way to find out for sure would be testing both against the same task to get an idea of what your expectations should look like before making any purchase decision.
Changing Mouse Polling Rate
- First, unplug your mouse from the computer.
- Press and hold buttons 4 + 5 to change the polling rate to125Hz (for gaming)
- Press and hold the number key 5 for setting the frequency to 500Hz (for scrolling websites)
- The frequency will be 1000Hz if you hold both buttons at once.
- Finally, plug in the mouse again for the new polling rate of your choice.
When it comes to gaming, you need a mouse with the right specs for your gameplay experience to be enjoyable. If you have an older model with a lower polling rate and want smoother animation, go ahead and upgrade, but if not, don’t worry because we will show how easy this is.
