Summary

Now that the PS5 has official M.2 SSD support as of September 15, we can all increase its painfully small storage space by installing an off-the-shelf M.2 module. But before you go out and buy a new SSD, you want to make sure it’s actually compatible as an expansion drive.

There are a few things to consider when buying an SSD for PS5: Only NVMe PCIe 4.0 drives with a 5,500MB/sec or faster sequential read speed are going to work. You also want to make sure that your extra SSD will actually fit inside the PS5’s expansion slot, especially considering that you’ll need a potentially bulky heatsink to keep temperatures in check.
